What an Employee Should Consider Before Accepting a Job

Being offered a new job can be thrilling and a huge relief - and you want to immediately say yes! But taking a step back and thinking carefully before accepting that job offer could be the best thing you could possibly do. Take a moment and consider some essential factors before accepting a job offer, so that you know you are making the best choice.

Are you being offered the best package?

If you have been job hunting for a while, or if you are being offered the job of your dreams, then you may believe that any compensation package is worth grabbing with both hands. Don't accept without thoroughly looking over your contract and the amount offered, to see if it matches the amount of work and commitment that is expected of you. Asking for a little more or negotiating your terms is completely acceptable, and should never lead to a job offer being rescinded.

Does the company offer benefits?

While it can be tempting to not worry about tomorrow, having the best possible benefits package will matter quite quickly. This should be part of your thought process when you look at your overall compensation. Contact the company HR department and ask about whether they offer a range of benefits to suit your needs, whether they are optional, and how these benefits impact your pay. Will you have progression?

You love the idea of your new role now, but will you be as excited in two or three years? Unless your role and company offer training and progression, you may become bored and wish to move on. Is the role really right for you?

Perhaps the most important question to ask yourself before signing on the dotted line is whether or not the role is truly the best fit for you. Even if you love the company, do you have the correct skills and will you be happy doing this job? If the answer is yes, then that's great - but if you have any niggling doubts, now is the time to address them.
